Developing Culturally Diverse Leaders

"At KeyBank, every employee plays a major role in our corporate mission. But it’s not always easy to find a program that is legitimately valuable, with world class

instructors and programs. That’s why EDI is so important to us and the economy of the Northwest.”

About Us

EDI's History

The Executive Development Institute (EDI) was founded in 1994 under the guidance and direction of the Japanese American Chamber of Commerce. It was created in response to the observation that Japanese Americans were underrepresented in corporate America's key leadership roles where the most critical decisions were influenced.

The program quickly expanded to include all Asian Pacific communities as it was determined that all Asian ethnicities share many of the same cultural values.  And in 2009, EDI added its Hispanic relevant curriculum.  Now in its 16th year, EDI's impact positively empowers participants, businesses, community agencies and community/business leaders.

Our Leadership Programs

EDI provides culturally-tailored leadership programs that put Asian-Pacifics & Hispanics on a fast track for successful executive service. It’s a unique program, providing cutting-edge leadership training that focuses on practical, real-world problem solving in a multicultural context.

EDI graduates develop the executive qualities they need for successful careers in upper-level management. Companies and non-profits benefit from a full realization of executive potential, and the strengths of a culturally diverse organization.  The Pacific Northwest Region grows across the board, in high-performance companies and other public service organizations, in a more inclusive society and a stronger economy.

The Leadership Discovery Program addresses the career goals of aspiring junior executives, first helping them fully understand cultural values and differences, then how they can be used or reconciled to the benefit of the modern organization.  It is a powerful program of self-discovery where individuals become more aware of their unique cultural values and how those values best translate into the corporate business environment.

The Leadership Navigation Program, designed for established professionals, provides a dynamic curriculum that addresses evolving issues in modern management.  It is designed to help strengthen leadership skills in the face of emerging challenges. In addition, it intensely trains the “hows” of executive leadership in an exceedingly safe learning environment.

Both are aggressive programs, but they yield results. Over 500 EDI alumni from 15 Asian-Pacific and Hispanic ethnicities spanning five generations are living and working in the Seattle and Portland area today.

Our Community Commitment

EDI also helps our community agencies become more efficient in serving their diverse constituencies.  EDI plants the notion that community involvement is not an option for future leaders -- it is a critical requirement.  Participation in EDI allows individuals to naturally (re)connect with their communities.  Each program year, chosen non-profit agencies are assigned an EDI team to assist with identifying, implementing, and measuring the results of project(s) that greatly benefit the agency and the communities they serve. EDI Alumni teams have assisted 67 nonprofit agencies to date.
